Frequently Asked Questions
What services does BiOTA Environmental Sciences offer?
BiOTA provides ecological consulting services specializing in marine, terrestrial, and coastal environments. We provide Environmental Scientists, Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM), Protected Species Observers (PSOs), Marine Mammal Observers (MMOs), Habitat Assessments, Avian Monitoring, Presence/Absence Surveys for Species of Concern, Underwater Noise Impact Assessments, and other applied research for regulatory compliance and conservation.
Is BiOTA Environmental Sciences available for subcontracting or collaborations?
Yes. We frequently partner with environmental consulting firms, engineering companies, NGOs, and government agencies as subject-matter experts or subcontractors. We also collaborate on grant-funded applied science research.
What geographic regions do you serve?
BiOTA is based in the U.S. and serves the U.S. East Coast, Gulf of Mexico, and select international marine regions in Canada and the U.K. & European Union. We specialize in work within U.S. waters regulated by BOEM, NOAA, and regional authorities as well as U.K. waters regulated by the MMO to name a few.
Do you provide PSOs for offshore projects?
Yes. BiOTA provides qualified Protected Species Observers (PSOs) as well as Marine Mammal Observers (MMOs) and Passive Acoustic Monitor Operators (PAMOs)for offshore wind, oil and gas, and coastal construction projects. Our team is trained to detect protected species and ensure environmental regulations are met under regulatory guidelines.
Can BiOTA Environmental Sciences support Habitat Conservation Plans (HCPs)?
Absolutely. BiOTA works with developers, environmental consultants, and agencies to provide scientific data and impact assessments that support the design and implementation of Habitat Conservation Plans (HCPs), especially in marine, estuarine, and coastal settings.
What types of protected species do you monitor?
We monitor marine mammals (whales, dolphins, porpoises), sea turtles, seabirds, sharks, rays, coastal fish species, bats, and other avian species depending on project requirements. Our work emphasizes conservation of vulnerable and protected species under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) and Endangered Species Act (ESA) through mitigation and minimization.
Does BiOTA Environmental Sciences work on terrestrial projects?
Yes. We support select terrestrial ecological monitoring projects, including bat acoustics services, habitat surveys, as well as marine projects and much more.
